A novel advancement in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) is here, presented by Swiss organization Zurich Soft Robotics with their Solskin system – the initial commercially accessible smart climate-adjusting building covering.

This advanced technology incorporates mobile solar panels that automatically follow the sun’s path during the day, creating up to 40% more power than stationary facade structures. The system’s smart operation, powered by Solskin’s machine learning, uses predictive self-instruction methods to perfect power output while keeping people inside comfortable.

The system’s effect on building power efficiency is noticeable, decreasing energy consumption by 20-80% compared with typical PV facade arrangements. In some situations, such as south-facing glass-fronted office areas in Zurich, Solskin can provide for a building’s total energy usage.

The technology integrates many advantages:

  • Adjustable solar tracking for peak power generation.
  • Smart shading operation for occupant ease.
  • Smooth architectural incorporation with adaptable styles.
  • Strong build suitable for both new constructions and updates.

The system has already received considerable interest, with a significant application planned for 2025 – a 1,300 square meter setup on Keller Druckmesstechnik AG’s new factory structure in Winterthur.

Produced by builders and robotics investigators at ETH Zurich, Solskin shows a substantial progression in sustainable building technology, providing a polished answer for the building power shift while keeping architectural appeal.
