A Fusion of Art, Energy, and Identity

To mark 25 years of climate leadership, Nuhma, a climate-focused company in Limburg, Belgium, unveiled a striking solar-powered artwork on its headquarters façade. The centerpiece—a vibrant duck designed by Hasselt-based artist Nele Bijnens—was printed directly onto two fully functional custom BIPV solar panels from SOLTECH.

This goes beyond decoration, embodying regional climate action by fusing cultural storytelling with renewable energy. The duck nods to The Flying Duckman porcelain by Piet Stockmans (displayed in Nuhma’s reception), reimagined with bold colors and flowing lines evoking Limburg’s rivers.

Where Solar Meets Storytelling

SOLTECH’s advanced foil printing integrates vivid art onto BIPV modules without sacrificing performance—these panels generate clean electricity (estimated total capacity of 400-500 Wp for the pair, covering ~2-4 m²) while doubling as a landmark.

  • BIPV Innovation: Custom aesthetics via foil on functional monocrystalline or similar cells, maintaining >20% efficiency.
  • Architectural Value: An art-embedded envelope enhances energy output and visual identity.
  • Narrative Power: Duck symbolizes heritage and sustainability.

As SOLTECH CEO Bas van de Kreeke states: “We believe solar panels can be beautiful, without compromising performance. This is exactly where SOLTECH makes the difference: innovative solar solutions that add architectural and narrative value”.

Technical and Cultural Impact

  • Energy Output: Fully grid-connected, contributing to Nuhma’s green portfolio (330 MWh annual production overall).
  • Durability: Foil tech withstands weathering, hail, and 25+ year lifespans per BIPV standards.
  • Cultural Resonance: Ties into local rivers and identity, humanizing climate tech—“SOLTECH brought artist Nele Bijnens’ vibrant design to life”.

BIPV here transcends utility, enabling public engagement and place-making—proving solar is about kilowatt-hours and cultural integration.

This case study shines for solar architecture enthusiasts:

  • BIPV versatility: Energy + artifacts in one.
  • Collaboration: Artists, engineers, climate orgs.
  • Inspiration: Urban narratives via custom facades (~2 panels show scalability).

Nuhma’s solar duck pioneers BIPV as cultural innovation. SOLTECH and Nuhma blend art, energy, and identity—ideal for Soular’s BIPV Projects section
