GNM Developments Presents Novel Co-Living Tower Plan in Birmingham

GNM Developments has put forward an ambitious proposal for a 21-storey co-living structure at 52 Gas Street, Birmingham. Named The Narrowhouse, this major initiative seeks to renew a disused canalside plot in the city’s Western Gateway Growth Zone.

A Blueprint for Eco-Conscious City Life

Designed by acclaimed firm Broadway Malyan, The Narrowhouse will offer 249 co-living units alongside shared spaces and amenities. The project aims to serve as a prominent symbol of eco-friendly design, striving to become the tallest energy-generating residential building worldwide. Its exterior will integrate over 4,000 square meters of solar panel technology (BIPV), advancing Birmingham’s carbon-neutral objectives.

Blending Modern Design with Historical Elements

Key features of the proposal include:

  • A slender 21-storey tower clad in cutting-edge solar paneling.
  • A six-level base constructed using reclaimed brick from the original site, honoring its historical context.
  • Retention of the existing Toll House, connecting the area to its industrial past.
  • A modern glass-enclosed space for shared resident amenities, encouraging social connections.

Gerald Manton, Managing Director of GNM Developments, stated:

Redefining Standards in Architecture

Hugo Fitzgerald, Principal at Broadway Malyan, remarked:

Drawing from historic canal-side architecture, the plan envisions a dynamic facade along Birmingham’s waterways. The strategic use of BIPV technology is expected to produce excess energy, potentially channeling it back into the local grid to support regional environmental targets.

Project Timeline

Subject to approval, construction could begin in late 2026, with completion slated for 2028. This milestone would mark a critical step in Birmingham’s efforts to become a prominent hub for eco-focused urban design.

The Narrowhouse exemplifies progress in residential architecture while cementing Birmingham’s role in advancing global environmental stewardship and city renewal.
